Fresh Milk Canal

.

.

I had a beautiful early morning cycle down through the Arroyo Seco, through Chinatown and eventually downtown. Then I sketched this out (the rough orange pencil idea of it) on the train on the way home. Some of my best work happens on the train like this. Something about a hard workout and then travel...it always sets my creative brain in motion.

Middle Road

.

Whee! Back to five posts in a week again. So good to be done with my freelance job.

On the other hand, I have to start taking storyboard tests again (my day job is ending, and I need to acquire another one), so next week I'll probably be as busy as I was when I was working freelance. So I'll go back to three posts a week.

But no complaints. This week was fun. And eventually I'll land another job, get settled, and go back to five posts a week.

Bathroom Tiles

I just can't stop using these yellow note cards from work!

(even though I know that it's high-acid, totally non-archival paper)

Top Track

This piece fought me hard yesterday, during the inking/painting.

I thought I'd eat lunch in the little park near the studio and work on this painting under the trees in a place that was pleasing to the eye. Clear, sunny spring day. Shouldn't be a problem, right?

But it was windy! This paper is thick, but it was still no match for the gusts of wind that kept lifting every part that wasn't held down by my left hand. I'd be JUST about to put my brush down in a certain spot, then the wind would come and lift the paper up into my brush. I ended up putting a few big globs of brown or white in unexpected places.

Also, my white gouache was acting very strange. I think the thin plastic bowl lid (originally it topped some yummy soup that I got at the commissary) had some oil or butter on it or something. The white gouache kept balling up and once I got it onto the paper it gathered up into little globby balls and wouldn't absorb into the paper at all. It mixed like oil and water…which is to say, it didn't.

But, even though I had to keep adjusting for wind and lumpy paint, in the end it turned out okay (the process of scanning and adjusting the levels always seems to make the bad stuff go away)

Spring break is over. But today I go back to work feeling refreshed. It was a good break.

We recently spent a few days in the Yosemite valley. It's the kind of place that gives you ideas.

Spring Break 2013

Hi.

I've been away for a few days, visiting Yosemite national park with my family. REALLY pretty place. Probably the most spectacular mountain/valley formations I've ever seen in my life. Amazing.

I had a friend upload these drawings to my Facebook account on a daily basis, but I didn't post them here before I left (like I was able to do last year).

So here they are. A little late, but all are present and accounted for, sir.

Enjoy.
